SYMPTOMS
The Distributed Password Authentication (DPA) client upgrade for Microsoft Internet Explorer fails, and you receive the following error message during installation:
CAUSE
The DPA installation tries to modify a flag in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security
If the key is absent, Setup generates the error message and fails to finish. The DPA upgrade is installed so that DPA will work, however MSN (The Microsoft Network) is not supported.
This also occurs if the Security Providers Value (which is also located in the preceding registry key) is missing.
WORKAROUND
Reinstall Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 or later and then run the DPA upgrade.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.
