IPCONFIG Does Not Display NetBIOS Scope ID

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation versions 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run ipconfig.exe /all, the entry for NetBIOS Scope ID is blank, even though you have a NetBIOS scope ID configured in your TCP/IP properties.

RESOLUTION

To see the NetBIOS Scope ID that is configured for your computer, you can do one of the following:

  • View it in the TCP/IP properties in Network Control Panel applet -OR-
  • Execute nbtstat -n

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.5x and 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
