Q168643

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 for Windows NT 4.0

When you click a link that runs a Java script, the Java script may start a new instance of Internet Explorer. If you quit the second instance of Internet Explorer and then click the link again, an "80010012" error message may be displayed.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if Microsoft Windows is not properly notified when you quit the second instance of Internet Explorer. If Windows is not notified that the second instance of Internet Explorer is no longer running, the "80010012" error message may be displayed when you click the link again, and Windows attempts to start another instance of Internet Explorer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time.
