SYMPTOMS

If you run Microsoft Outlook 97 on the same computer as Eudora Pro, Eudora Light 3.0.1 32 bit, or another e-mail client, you may receive one of the following error messages when using Outlook:

OUTLLIB.DLL is linked to missing export MAPI32.DLL.

-or-

The MAPI Spooler has shut down unexpectedly. Close all mail-enabled applications before attempting to log on again.

-or-

Ordinal 136 could not be located in the dynamic link library Mapi32.dll.

NOTE: The "Ordinal number" may vary.

CAUSE

Eudora Pro and some other e-mail clients include a set of messaging functions called Extended Messaging Services Application Programming Interface that may cause this problem.

RESOLUTION

Select the appropriate method based on the e-mail client you use.

If you use one of the Eudora clients, turn off Eudora's MAPI service:

  1. On the Eudora Tools menu, click Options.
  2. In the Category list, click MAPI.
  3. Under, Use Eudora MAPI server, click Never and OK.
  4. Quit Eudora and restart Outlook.

If you do not use the Eudora client, find all instances of Mapi32.dll, rename each, and replace the Mapi32.dll file in your System folder.

  1. Close all open applications.
  2. In the Windows Explorer, right-click the Mapi32.dll file in your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.
  3. Click Rename on the Shortcut menu.
  4. Type Mapi32.old as the new name for the file, and press ENTER.
  5. Copy the Mapi32.dll from the OFFICE\WMS\WIN95 or OFFICE\WMS\WINNT folder of your Office 97 setup compact disc (CD), into your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.

If you use the Small Business Edition of Office, copy the Mapi32.dll from the OUTLOOK\OFFICE\WMS\WIN95 folder of your Office setup CD into your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.

NOTE: Mapi32.dll is a system file. If you do not see this file on your CD-ROM, click the Folder Options on the View menu of Windows Explorer, and then under the View tab's Advanced settings, click the radio button to select "Show all files" for Hidden files.

  1. In the Windows Explorer, click the file you copied to your hard drive, and on the File menu, click Properties.
  2. Click to clear the Read-Only check box, click to select the Archive check box, and click OK.
  3. Close Windows Explorer.
  4. Restart your computer.
