SYMPTOMS
After upgrading to Microsoft Outlook 97 from the Microsoft Exchange Client, when you click the Inbox icon, Microsoft Outlook 97 does not start.
CAUSE
Both Outlook and Exchange Client use a shared component called the Windows Messaging System (WMS). Outlook setup does not change WMS to point to Outlook.
WORKAROUND
You can start Outlook using the standard Windows methods. Use the Programs option from the Windows Start menu or create a desktop shortcut to the Outlook program file.
MORE INFORMATION
A file called Chnginbx.exe is located on the Office 97 distribution CD in the \Valupack\Patch folder. Running this program will remove the Inbox icon from the desktop and convert the Outlook shortcut to a permanent desktop icon. The Outlook icon will then not only start Outlook; it will also have the attributes of the old Inbox, such as the ability to do a right mouse click and access user profiles and service properties.
Note Microsoft does not recommend running the Chnginbx.exe file with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Microsoft Outlook 2002. The results are not predictable and are not supported.
