SYMPTOMS
When you move a text box that is located in a Microsoft Excel chart, you may experience one or more of the following problems:
- The text box grows larger.
- The chart grows much larger.
- The chart that you have pasted into your Microsoft Word document grows much larger.
CAUSE
These problems can occur if the following conditions are true:
- You create a chart in Excel.
-and-
- You add a text box to the chart.
-and-
- You zoom the Excel worksheet to a percentage other than 100%.
-and-
- You copy the chart.
-and-
- You click Paste Link in the Paste Special dialog box in Word.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.
WORKAROUND
To work around the problem, set the zoom level of the worksheet that contains the chart to 100%.

Example of the Problem
The following steps illustrate how to reproduce the problem:
- Start Excel 97.
- Type the following values into a new workbook:
A1: 1 A2: 2
- Select cells A1:A2, and then click Chart on the Insert menu. Click Finish in the Chart Wizard dialog box.
A column chart is created on Sheet1. - If the Drawing toolbar is not already visible, click the Drawing button on the Standard toolbar.
- Draw a text box on the chart.
- Type some text in the text box.
- Click a cell on the worksheet to activate the worksheet.
- Click Zoom on the View menu. Click 75%, and then click OK.
- Click the chart, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.
- Start Word 97.
- Click Paste Special on the Edit menu. Click Paste Link, and then click OK.
- Activate Excel.
- Move the text box around on the chart.
The chart may zoom or resize itself. If you activate Word, you will see that the chart has been resized.
