SYMPTOMS
When you create a table of contents for a document in Word 7.0 that was originally created in Word 6.0, some entries are missing from the table of contents.
Only those heading styles with actual heading numbering levels assigned appear in the table of contents. Those paragraphs formatted with heading styles that don't have automatic numbering are omitted from the table of contents.
CAUSE
Word 7.0 incorrectly converts Heading Numbering in Word 6.0 documents. This does not happen with documents created in Word 7.0.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUND
Open the Word 6.0 document in Word 7.0 and remove and reapply heading numbering. Use the following steps to do this:
- Place the insertion point at the beginning of the document.
- On the Format menu, click the Heading Numbering button.
- Click Remove.
This removes all heading numbering from your document.
- On the Format menu, click Heading Numbering.
- Choose the format that most closely resembles the one you want. Click OK.
- On the Insert menu, click Index And Tables.
- Select the Table of Contents tab.
- Select the format you want, and click OK.
- When prompted if you want to replace the selected table of contents, click OK.
