WD: File Length May Increase in Converted Word 2.0 Document

Q139702

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you convert a Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.x document in Word version 6.x or later, the document may be several lines or pages longer than it was in Word 2.x.

CAUSE

Word inserted extra space between the lines to allow for superscripted or subscripted characters. The compatibility option "Don't add extra space for raised/lowered characters" is not selected. (To locate this option, click Options on the Tools menu, and then select the Compatibility tab.) When this option is not selected, Word repaginates the document and adjusts line spacing to accommodate raised or lowered characters. As a result, the length of the document may increase.

RESOLUTION

To control the line spacing when you convert a Word 2.0 document, select the compatibility option "Don't add extra space for raised/lowered characters." To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Click to select the "Don't add extra space for raised/lowered characters" check box.
