Setup: Could Not Open <path>\DISK2\MSOFF2.CAB

Q124976

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.2c, 4.3c

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office 4.2c or 4.3c from a server containing copies of all of the Microsoft Office disks, you may receive the following error message

Could not open <path>\DISK2\MSOFF2.CAB

where <path> is the path to the directory in which the disks are located.

CAUSE

Setup expects the disks to be in separate, specific subdirectories of a single directory (for example, MS_OFFICE4.2). Although the name of the main directory is does not have to be a particular name, Setup does expect the subdirectories to be named DISK1, DISK2, DISK3, and so on. In addition, the files from Disk 1 of Microsoft Office Setup should be in the DISK1 subdirectory, MSOFF2.CAB should be in the DISK2 subdirectory, MSOFF3.CAB is in the DISK3 subdirectory, and so on through disk 27. If these subdirectories are not named DISK1 and so on, you will receive the error message above.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create the DISK1, DISK2, DISK3, ... DISK27 subdirectories in the main Office directory on the server and move the appropriate related file to those directories. Once the files are in the appropriate subdirectories, run Setup again.

NOTE: When you run Setup in maintenance mode, Setup expects to find the same drive and path to the files. For additional information on setting up Office over a network and using specific drive letters, see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
