SYMPTOMS

If you use the Paste or Paste Special command to insert a bitmap from some applications, you may see only a black rectangle, or the bitmap may paste as a black and white image. This will most likely occur if the image is a 256-color bitmap with a palette (for example, an image from Dinosaurs).

RESOLUTION

To paste a color picture in Works 3.0, use Paste Special and select Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) to bring the picture successfully into Works. You can also use Microsoft Draw to embed the picture in the document. In Works 2.x you must embed the picture using Microsoft draw.

To insert the image as a DIB using Works 3.0:

  1. In Works 3.0, choose Paste Special from the Edit menu.
  2. In the Paste Special box, select Device Independent Bitmap or picture, and choose OK or press ENTER.

The image should now be in color.

If the source application does not support DIB, you can perform the following workaround to insert the image as a drawing:

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Drawing.
  2. In Microsoft Draw, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
  3. From the File menu, choose Exit And Return To <Document Name>.
  4. Choose Yes To Update <Document Name>.

The image should now be in color.
