Recently Used File List Does Not Update After Opening Document

Q111766

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

If Norton Desktop version 3.0 for Windows (NDW) is installed, Word for Windows may not update the Recently Used Files list (also known as the 1, 2, 3, 4 Command) on the File menu when you open a file.

CAUSE

The NDW FileAssist utility adds a FileOpen macro to Word that does not correctly update the Recently Used Files list. By contrast, the NDW FileOpen macro, which was written for use with Word 2.x for Windows, correctly updates the Word 2.x Recently Used File list.

WORKAROUND

To restore the functionality of the Recently Used Files list, rename or delete the global FileOpen macro installed by NDW. For assistance with this procedure, see pages 752-754 in the Word 6.0 "User's Guide."

MORE INFORMATION

The NDW FileAssist utility installs modified FileOpen, FileSave, and FileSaveAs macro commands as global macros in any application, such as Word 6.0, that does not use COMMDLG.DLL. These macros enhance the functionality of each command, but the NDW FileOpen macro fails to retain the functionality of the Recently Used File list in Word 6.0.
