REF (Reference) Field Result Formatted as Bold

Q111699

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.1

SYMPTOMS

The result of a REF field is always bold when you insert the REF field by 1) choosing the Field command from the Insert menu, 2) selecting Ref in the Field Names list, 3) typing a bookmark name after the field code in the Field Codes box, and 4) selecting the Preserve Formatting During Updates option.

Entering the same field instructions from the keyboard will give a normal, non-bold result.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows, versions 1.x, 2.x, 6.0, and 6.0a. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0c for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Do not select the Preserve Formatting During Updates option when setting up the field.

Method 2: Create the field manually:

  1. Press CTRL+F9 to insert field braces.
  2. Type the contents of the field code as

    REF <bookmarkname> \* MERGEFORMAT

where <bookmarkname> is the name of the bookmark.
