XL5: Chart Legend Text Truncated Using Zoom Command

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you clear the Chart Sizes With Window Frame check box on the Chart tab of the Options dialog box, when you use the Zoom command, the text in your chart legend may be truncated at the edge of the legend.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the legend is scaled exactly with the window zoom factor, but the fonts are not. When you use the Zoom command, the legend text does not fit in the legend the way it does when you view the chart at 100 percent. The size of the legend scales with the window zoom factor instead of sizing to accommodate the legend text. This is most noticeable when you select a zoom magnification option of around 50 percent.

Note that this behavior only occurs when you view the chart. The chart text is printed correctly.

WORKAROUND

To avoid having your chart legend text appear truncated, do either of the following:

  • Select the Chart Sizes With Window Frame check box on the Chart tab of the Options dialog box. This disables the Zoom command, but your chart text will not be truncated.
  • Add spaces to the end of your chart series with the longest name. This forces the edge of the legend farther from your legend text.

Note that the last workaround affects the way the chart is printed. Because this problem only affects the way the chart appears on the screen, the first workaround is the best.

MORE INFORMATION

When you select the Sizes With Window Command from the View menu, the size of the chart sheet depends on the size of the window. With this option selected, you cannot use the Zoom command to size the chart.
