IBM Token Ring 4/16 Card Works Incorrectly on Fast Computer

Q111657

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you are using an IBM Token Ring 4/16 MB card on a Compaq computer faster than a 486/33, the IBM Token Ring 4/16 card may not function correctly. An error message indicating one of the services failed to start appears during startup; Event Viewer lists the affected services.

CAUSE

The affected services fail to start because they depend on the IBMTOK to start properly. The error message for the IBMTOK in Event Viewer indicates that the adapter returned an invalid value and that the adapter is not functioning properly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • Use the computer at a slower speed.
  • Use a 16-bit or 32-bit card.
