Moving Security and System Logs to Another Location

SUMMARY

The locations of the security log and event log are specified in the Registry. If disk space problems are encountered in the C (or boot) partition, these files can be moved. To change these parameters, use the following procedure:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree.
  3. Go to the SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog key.
  4. To specify a new location for the security log, select the Security key.

To specify a new location for the system log, select the System key.

  1. Double-click the File value, type the new path name, and choose OK.
  2. Shutdown and restart your computer for these changes to take effect.
