SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, the file XL5GALRY.XLS is opened as a hidden workbook when you do any of the following:

  • Create a chart with a user-defined chart set as the Default Chart Format
  • Apply a user-defined chart autoformat using the AutoFormat command located on the Format menu
  • Choose Options from the Tools menu

Note that when you perform one of the above actions for the first time, it takes longer than when you perform the action again in the same session of Microsoft Excel. This additional time is the time it takes Microsoft Excel to open the file XL5GALRY.XLS. You cannot unhide this file when it is open.

MORE INFORMATION

When you perform one of the above actions, the XL5GALRY.XLS file is opened as a hidden file, and remains in your computer's memory until you do any of the following:

  • Quit Microsoft Excel
  • Close all files by holding down the SHIFT key and choosing Close All from the File menu.
  • Open the file XL5GALRY.XLS. (This action is not recommended.)

The file XL5GALRY.XLS is used to store custom chart autoformats. This file is in the Microsoft Excel version 5.0 file format (with slight modifications so that it can be accessed as a hidden workbook). To modify this file, use one of the methods below.

CAUTION: You should not have to open this file to modify it. If you do open XL5GALRY.XLS, you should create a backup before making any changes to the file.
