XL: All Data Labels Change With Single Series Selected

Last reviewed: September 13, 1996
Article ID: Q111349

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In the Format Data Series dialog box in Microsoft Excel, if you select an option on either the X Error Bars tab or the Y Error Bars tab, and then select an option on the Data Labels tab, the selected Data Labels option applies to every series on the chart, not just the selected series.

The same problem occurs if you select an option on the Data Labels tab, then select an option on either the X Error Bars tab or the Y Error Bars tab, and then select the Data Labels tab before you choose OK.

WORKAROUND

To select an option on the Data Labels tab in the Format Data Series dialog box for a selected series on a chart, without modifying any other series on the chart, do not select the Data Labels tab AFTER you select an option on either the X Error Bars tab or the Y Error Bars tab in the dialog box.

If the Data Labels option has been unintentionally applied to all the series on your chart, you can reset the Data Labels option for all of the series by doing the following:

  1. Select the chart plot area by clicking an area of the chart that does not contain another item.
  2. From the Insert menu, choose Data Labels. The option you select applies to every series in the chart when you choose OK.
