"Windows Cannot Print..." Error Using CCOM Fax Printer Driver

ID: Q111275

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

The following error message may occur if you send a fax from Word for Windows using the CCOM fax board, which is supplied with The Complete Communicator, a program manufactured by The Complete PC:

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup

This error occurs more frequently if your fax contains a graphics image.

CAUSE

The Complete PC has confirmed that this is a problem with the printer driver supplied with the CCOM fax board. This board has been discontinued, and the company has no plans for updating the driver.

WORKAROUNDS

NOTE: The workarounds provided below are from The Complete PC technical support. Microsoft has not tested these procedures. According to The Complete PC technical support, these workarounds produce best results if your fax contains only text. If the fax contains a graphic, the results may be less reliable. In other words, these are partial workarounds at best.

Method 1: Fax Directly from Word Through the COM Port

You can fax directly from Word 6.0 using the RapidFax printer driver, which is supplied with The Complete Communicator, using the following instructions:

  1. Use the Printers icon in Windows Control Panel to install the RapidFax printer driver (if necessary) and select it as the default Windows printer driver.
  2. Connect it to the COMx port where your fax board is installed.
  3. Quit and restart Windows.
  4. Start Word and print a document. It should fax correctly, with no error message.

Method 2: Convert the RAPIDFAX.DOC Macros to Word 6.0 Format

RAPIDFAX.DOC contains WordBasic macros that assign a Rapid Fax command to the File menu in Word. When you choose the Rapid Fax command, the macro faxes the current document. The RAPIDFAX.DOC macros are Word 1.x macros, so you must first convert them in Word 2.x before you can open them in Word 6.0. If you do not have Word 2.x, use Workaround 1 above instead.

  1. Open RAPIDFAX.DOC in Word 2.x to convert the macros from Word 1.x format. Save the file in Word 2.x file format.
  2. Quit Word 2.x and start Word 6.0.
  3. Open RAPIDFAX.DOC.
  4. From the File menu, choose Templates, then choose the Organizer button.
  5. Copy the RAPIDFAX.DOC macros to the desired template (copy them to NORMAL.DOT to install them as global macros), then choose the Close button.
  6. From the File menu, choose Save All. Choose Yes when Word asks if you want to save the Word 2.x macros in Word 6.0 format.
  7. To fax a document, open it and then choose Rapid Fax from the File menu and follow the instructions in the dialog boxes that appear.
