SYMPTOMS

If an embedded chart has chart label text (for example, labels for the x or y axis) and the label text wraps differently in print preview than it does on the screen, the chart may "shrink" each time you print it or view it in print preview.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you use a combination of certain high- resolution video drivers and fonts.

WORKAROUNDS

To avoid having the size of your chart change, do any of the following:

  • Size the chart to be slightly larger or smaller, so that the text labels wrap the same in the normal view and in print preview.
  • Use a font or font size for the chart text that wraps the same in the normal view as in print preview.
  • Make the chart text slightly longer or shorter.
  • Insert extra spaces in the source data if the chart text is linked to a cell on a worksheet, or insert hard carriage returns if the text is not linked.

If none of the methods above work, save the file before printing or viewing in print preview. Then close the file without saving it. When you open it again, the chart is restored to the original size.

Note that you can resize the plot area of the chart to restore the original size; however, the size of the chart will continue to change when you choose Print or Print Preview from the File menu.

This problem does not occur with chart sheets.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
