The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Macintosh, version 5.1

SYMPTOM

Title and scroll bars in the active Word document window unexpectedly do not display in 3-D. In addition, if Word is started but not active, the title and scroll bars in the Finder’s active window do not display in 3-D.

CAUSE

The problem occurs in System 7.x when the Monitors Control Panel is set so that the monitor displays 16 shades of gray or 16 colors.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 5.1 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

If possible, set your monitor to display more than 16 shades of gray or colors:

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
  2. Open the Monitors Control Panel. All available monitor characteristics show at the top of the Monitors window.
  3. Select 256 or more colors or shades of gray from the Characteristics list.
  4. Close the monitors Control Panel.

MORE INFORMATION

When the problem occurs, the active Word document window displays with its title and scroll bars in black and white without the normal shading. Also, if Word is started but Finder is the active program, the active Finder window displays with its title and scroll bars in black and white.
