SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Works, when you attempt to open a file, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Works Cannot Load Conversion Files

RESOLUTIONS

The following are conditions that can cause the error. Three problems and suggestions for solving them are discussed below.

For more information about how to perform these tasks in Windows, see your Windows printed documentation or online Help.

Problem 1: A reference in the [MS Text Converters] section of the
WIN.INI file may be invalid.

Solution: Make sure each reference in the [MS Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file points to a valid file in the <drive>:<windir>directory, or has the correct path to an alternate directory (where <drive> is your hard disk drive letter and <windir> is your Windows directory).

Problem 2: A unidirectional (single format) text converter may appear in
the list of converters in the [MS Text Converters] section of
the WIN.INI file before the desired converter.
Cause: When Works for Windows validates the converter list, it is
unable to recognize unidirectional text converters correctly.
One example of a unidirectional text converter would be one
that only imports information or exports information.

Workaround: Remove unidirectional text converters from the [MS Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file. Removing converters from this list disables converters for all applications.

NOTE: There is no easy way to know which drivers in the
WIN.INI file are unidirectional. Unidirectional converter
entries in the WIN.INI file look exactly the same as
bidirectional converters. The only way to know for sure is
if you try to save or open a file in a certain format and
then you get a message such as "You cannot save in this format.
        This is a read-only converter."

The following files are known unidirectional converters:

         - DISPWRIT.CNV
         - LOTUS123.CNV
         - MSWORD6.CNV
         - XLBIFF.CNV
         - DBASE.CNV
         - MULTIPLAN.CNV

Publisher 1.0 and Works 2.x for Windows have conflicts with
unidirectional converters. Upgrading to the current versions
of these programs corrects this problem. For more information
about unidirectional text converters query on the following
words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

unidirectional and MS and Text and Converters
Problem 3: A conversion file is missing or corrupt.

Solution: Delete and reinstall the following conversion files, located in the MSAPPSsubdirectory of your WINDOWS directory.

        - WPFT5.CNV
        - WORDWIN1.CNV
        - WORDWIN2.CNV (Works 2.0a only)
        - WRITWIN.CNV
        - WRKSWIN.CNV

To reinstall the conversion files, perform a custom
installation of Works for Windows and select "Converters for
Word Processor and Graphics" from the list of choices.
