SYMPTOMS

When you try to import a document that is currently open in its original application (that is, a Word for Windows document that is currently open in Word), the following error message will occur.

In Works 3.0

Cannot find file or file already open: <filename>
You may have specified an invalid name and path, the file may no longer exist, or it is already open. Make sure the name and path are correct, or close the file. If you use Works on a network, you may need to wait until another person closes it.

Choosing OK returns you to the Startup dialog box.

In Works 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a

Cannot access the document <filename>. The document may already be open or it may be a read-only document.

RESOLUTION

  1. Make sure the file name and path for the file are accurate and point to a logical directory or folder and file name.
  2. Make sure the file or document is not currently open in another application or in Works.
