FileSaveAs Saves Documents in Incorrect Foreign File Format

Q110929

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

If Norton Desktop version 3.0 for Windows is installed, Word versions 2.x and 6.0 for Windows may save documents in an incorrect foreign file format. For example, if you specify the WordPerfect 5.1 format in Word's File Save As dialog box, Word may actually save the file to the WordStar file format or another undesired format.

In addition, the Confirm Conversions check box will not be on the File Open dialog box.

CAUSE

Norton Desktop for Windows (NDW) adds FileOpen, FileSave, and FileSaveAs macros to Word for Windows. The FileSave and FileSaveAs macros incorrectly define the text converter order, which results in files being saved in a format different than the one selected.

STATUS

Norton has a correction for this problem. The file NDW3UP.EXE is available from the Symantec BBS, the Norton CIS forum or Norton can be contacted at:

   Symantec BBS (541) 484-6669

RESOLUTION

To restore Word's functionality, choose one of the three following actions:

Method 1

Rename or delete the FileSave and FileSaveAs macros installed by Norton Desktop for Windows. This method maintains Norton's added functionality for the FileOpen command.

Word 6.0 Rename or delete the FileSave or FileSaveAs macros following the directions on pages 752-754 of the Word user's guide.

Word 2.x From the Tools menu, choose Macro. In the resulting dialog box, select the global FileSave macro and choose the Delete or the Rename button. Perform the same action again for the FileSaveAs macro.

Method 2

Disable Norton's FileAssist for Word for Windows. This method disables all of Norton's FileAssist added functionality for Word for Windows only. Word 6.0 Choose the Config button in Word's File Save As dialog box. Clear the "FileAssist Enabled for Winword" check box and choose the OK button. Choose the Yes button in the FileAssist informational dialog box that displays next.

Word 2.x Choose the Config button in Word's File Save As dialog box . Clear the "FileAssist Enabled for Msword" check box and choose the OK button. Choose the Yes button in the FileAssist informational dialog box that displays next.

Application level settings such as this can be overridden by settings in the Norton Control Center. Verify that the "Override Application-level Settings" check box is not selected.

Method 3

Disable FileAssist for all applications.

From the Norton Desktop Applications group, start the Control Center by double-clicking the Control Center icon. Choose the Defaults button. In the resulting dialog box, select FileAssist in the Categories box. Clear the Enable FileAssist check box and choose the OK button.

MORE INFORMATION

Norton Desktop version 3.0 for Windows contains a utility called FileAssist, which enhances the functionality of the File Open, File Save, and File Save As commands. FileAssist adds options for all applications that use COMMDLG.DLL to implement these commands.

Because Word for Windows does not use COMMDLG.DLL, NDW considers Word a special case and installs FileOpen, FileSave, and FileSaveAs macros as Global macros either when NDW is installed or the first time Word is run after installation. These macros add similar functionality to these commands for Word for Windows. However, the FileSave and FileSaveAs macros incorrectly define the text converter order, which results in the described behavior.

Norton Desktop is manufactured by a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability. For more information, contact Symantec directly at:
