SUMMARY

This article describes how to convert documents between Microsoft Works for Macintosh version 1.x and 2.x and Microsoft Word.

To exchange a word processing document between Works versions 1.x or 2.x and Microsoft Word, save the document in Rich Text Format (RTF) from the source word processor and then open the document from RTF format into Word.

Word 5.0 and 5.1 for the Macintosh include a Works 2.x for the Macintosh converter and can read Works 1.x and 2.x files and save to Works 2.x format if this converter is installed. To convert from Word for the Macintosh to Works 1.x for the Macintosh, you must save the Word document in RTF format and open from RTF format into Works.

Word 6.x for the Macintosh can read a Works 1.x file that is saved in RTF format; Works 1.x cannot read a Word for the Macintosh file saved in RTF format. Word 6.x for the Macintosh does not include a filter for Works 1.x for the Macintosh files and cannot read a Works 1.x file using the Word 5.x converter. A converter is available for Word 6.x for the Macintosh to read and save as Works 2.x and 3.x for the Macintosh files.
