The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message when you update a Microsoft Excel LINK field in Word 6.0 for Windows:
The action cannot be completed, because Excel is busy.
CAUSE
In some cases, you cannot link a Microsoft Excel version 4.0 workbook spreadsheet or chart to a Word 6.0 document.
In addition, sometimes this error occurs on a slow computer when you have many add-ins installed.
STATUS
We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do the following:
- Re-register both Word and Microsoft Excel by double- clicking their registration files in File Manager. The registration file for Word 6.0 is WINWORD6.REG; the registration file for Excel 5.0 is EXCEL5.REG.
- Remove the spreadsheet or chart from the Microsoft Excel workbook.
- Have Microsoft Excel running when you update the LINK field in Word 6.0.
- Remove any unnecessary add-ins (if applicable).
