The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Line Drawing button on the Drawing toolbar to attach a line to the left side of column A, the line may not appear when you print your document or view it in print preview.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Cell Gridlines check box is cleared in the Page Setup dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following to add a border (rather than a line) to the left of the column:

  • Select the left border option from the Borders button on the Formatting toolbar. (You can display the Formatting toolbar by choosing Toolbars from the Options menu.)

    -or-

  1. Select the cells in column A that require a line on the left-hand side of the column.
  2. In versions 3.x and 4.x, choose Border from the Format menu. In version 5.0, choose Cells from the Format menu, and then select the Border tab.
  3. In the Border dialog box, choose the appropriate line weight and select Left. Select OK to accept the change.
