Shading Patterns Do Not Print to High Resolution Printers

Q110710

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Shading may print as a solid color or solid shading when you print a paragraph or table cell that has a shading pattern applied (such as Dk. Dwn Diagonal) from Word 6.0 for Windows to a high resolution printer (such as the Linographics 1270 dpi or any 600 dpi printer).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of the high resolution of the printer; the shading pattern is printed, but the shading pattern lines are so close together that they appear as a solid color or as solid shading. Word cannot space the lines farther apart so that they appear as separate lines when printed. With a magnifying glass you can see that the shading pattern was printed, but with the lines very close together.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the printer driver for a lower resolution:

  1. In the Windows Control Panel, choose the Printers icon.
  2. Choose Setup.
  3. Change the resolution to a lower value.
