WORKAROUND

The following are methods you can use to convert documents between Word 6.0 and Works 3.0, depending on which program you have.

Word 6.0 and Works 3.0 Are Installed on Your Computer

A shared converter named WKS3WIN.CNV that allows other applications to read and write Works 3.0 for Windows format is installed by Works 3.0 for Windows Setup. This converter automatically becomes available to Word 6.0 for Windows provided Word is installed on the same computer as Works.

The next time you run Word, you will be able to directly open a Works 3.0 for Windows document. You will also be able to save a Word 6.0 document as Works 3.0 for Windows format by choosing the "Works 3.0 for Windows" option in the Save File As Type list in the Word 6.0 Save As dialog.

Only Word 6.0 or Works 3.0 Is Installed on Your Computer

If you only have access to Word 6.0 or to Works 3.0 for Windows, you can use Word 2.0 for Windows format as an interim format to facilitate conversion between the two products.

To use information from a Works 3.0 document in Word 6.0:

  1. In the Works word processing module, choose Save As from the File menu.
  2. Specify Word for Windows 2.0 format in the Save File As Type list, enter a new filename, and choose OK to save the document.
  3. Open the Word 2.0 document created in step 2 into Word 6.0.

To use information from a Word 6.0 document in Works 3.0:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  2. Specify Word for Windows 2.0 format in the Save File As Type list, enter a new filename, and choose OK to save the document.
  3. Open the Word 2.0 document created in step 2 into Works 3.0.

MS Word 6.0 Is Installed, and You Need To Convert Works 3.0 Files

  1. Obtain the converter (WKS3WN.EXE) from online services. (For more information about obtaining this file from online services, see the "To Obtain This File" section of this article.
  2. Explode the file in the directory containing Word 6.0
  3. Copy the WKSOLE.DLL and WKSOLEUI.DLL to the Windows\System subdirectory
  4. Start Word and choose [file open]

    1. Place an X in the [confirm conversions] box
    2. In the [file name] box, type C:\winword\setup\setup.exe
    3. Choose Cancel in the [convert file] dialog box

To use the converter, open the Works 3.0 file in Word. The program should demonstrate recognition of the Works 3.0 file by displaying the Works 3.0 option in the [convert file] dialog box. If not, see below.

Word 6.0 fails to register the WKS3WIN.CNV

  1. Confirm that the WKS3WIN.CNV is located in your Word directory. The converter may not register correctly if it is located in the MSAPPS\TEXTCONV subdirectory of Windows.
  2. Use a text editor such as Windows Notepad to open the WINWORD6.INI file, and make the following modifications to the file:

    1. In the [Ms Text converters] group of the WINWORD6.INI file, determine if a Works 2.0 converter precedes the Works 3.0 converter. If so, move the Works 3.0 converter so that it appears before the Works 2.0 converter.
    2. Save the changes and restart Windows.

Repeat the registration procedure shown above and Word will correctly register the converter.

NOTE: Word fails to see the Works 3.0 converter if it first sees the converter for Works 2.0 or if the converter is not in the directory containing Word 6.0.
