The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0 SYMPTOMS When Microsoft Windows Object Packager has been used to insert a Microsoft Excel workbook in a Microsoft Word document, double-clicking the embedded icon may not open the workbook in Microsoft Excel. CAUSE In object linking and embedding (OLE) version 1.0, there no file type for Microsoft Excel workbooks. Therefore, double-clicking the icon opens and closes Microsoft Excel without displaying the workbook. RESOLUTION In File Manager, do the following to create an association for the Microsoft Excel 4.0 workbook file format: From the File menu, choose Associate. Type "XLW" (without the quotation marks) in the Files with Extension box. In the Associate With box, type "C:\EXCEL\EXCEL.EXE" (without the quotation marks) or type the full path to the Microsoft Excel application executable file. MORE INFORMATION Steps to Reproduce Problem Close Microsoft Excel and start Microsoft Word 2.0. From the Insert menu, choose Object. In the Object dialog box, select Package, and choose OK. In Object Packager, choose Import from the File Menu. Choose a workbook file. From the File menu in Object Packager, choose Exit. When you are prompted to "Update Document?" choose the Yes button. Double-click the icon in Word. The Microsoft Excel workbook object will not start the Microsoft Excel application and you will not be able to open the packaged workbook document.
