Comparing Versions of Two RTF Documents as Text Not Possible

Q110441

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you open a rich-text format (RTF) document as Text Only and then choose the Compare Versions option in the Tools Revisions dialog box to compare it to a previous version, you cannot compare the two RTF files as text files.

Instead, the content of the earlier version appears in Word format followed by the content of the newer RTF file in text format. The entire content of the newer file appears as revised text.

CAUSE

When an RTF file or a document in any other foreign file format is specified with the Compare Versions option in the Tools Revisions dialog box, Word automatically converts the document to Word 6.0 format. Without the option to choose to open the RTF file as Text Only, it is impossible to compare two RTF documents (that is, compare underlying RTF code revisions) in text form.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this as a problem in Word 6.0 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
