The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0, 6.0a - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you have “smart quotes” quotation marks (also called “curly quotes”) in your document and you run the grammar checker, the smart quotes are replaced with standard quotation marks.

CAUSE

The current grammar module, supplied by Houghton Miflin, recognizes smart quotes and changes them to standard quotation marks.

WORKAROUND

There are no options to prevent the grammar checker from changing your quotation mark type. However, you can work around this problem by using the Word search-and-replace feature to replace the standard quotation marks with smart quotes. To do so:

  1. After the grammar checker replaces the smart quotes with standard quotation marks, choose Replace from the Edit menu.
  2. In the Find What box, type standard quotation marks (").
  3. In the Replace With box, type “^0148” (without the quotation marks).
  4. Choose Replace or Replace All.
