WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you exit the Page Setup dialog box in Word for Windows you may receive the following error message:

The margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for some sections

CAUSE

This error occurs when an RTF (rich-text format) document generated by WriteNow 3.0 for the Macintosh is opened in Word 2.x for Windows.

An erroneous flag set in the RTF stream sets the Default Tab Stops to 31680 twips (22 inches). The maximum width of a document in Word 2.x is exactly 22 inches. Word reads this as an incorrect setting in the Page Setup and displays the error message.

NOTE: Word 6.0 does not have any difficulties with reading an RTF file with this setting.

STATUS

WordStar International (the maker of WriteNow) has been notified of the problem with their RTF converter.

RESOLUTION

There are two ways to correct this problem in Word for Windows:

Workaround 1

  1. Open and convert the RTF file into Word for Windows.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Tabs.
  3. In the Default Tab Stops box, remove 22" and replace it with a lower number (.5" suggested). Choose OK.

Workaround 2

With multiple documents, it may be faster to replace the offending code in the RTF file itself. The offending command is “”. This can be changed to “” (1-inch intervals) or “” (half-inch intervals).
