The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5

SYMPTOMS

Smart quotes (“curly” quotation marks) are lost when Word for MS-DOS opens a rich text format (RTF) file.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in Word 5.x for MS-DOS. Word’s RTF filter does not convert the smart-quote characters as the filter has no ASCII equivalents to convert them to.

STATUS

The RTF filter that ships with Word 6.0 for MS-DOS handles smart quotes better, replacing them with straight quotation marks.

RESOLUTION

To avoid losing smart quotes, do not use the RTF format (also known as interchange format), to convert files for use in Word 5.x for MS-DOS. Instead, save the files directly in the Word for MS-DOS format.

MORE INFORMATION

In Word for MS-DOS, the availability of special characters (such as smart quotes) is dependent on the character set being used in Word. TrueType fonts containing smart quotes ship with Word 6.0 for MS-DOS.
