SUMMARY
In Word, there is no default button for automatic hyphenation. However, you can set the option as a default for future documents by modifying the Normal.dot template.
MORE INFORMATION
To modify the Normal.dot template, use the method appropriate for your version of Word.
Word 98
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Files Of Type list, click Document Templates (*.dot) and be sure the current directory is your Template subfolder.
In Word 98, this is typically<Macintosh HD>:<Office98 folder>:Templates.
- Select the Normal template and then click Open.
- On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Hyphenation.
- Click to select the Automatically Hyphenate Document check box.
- In the Hyphenation Zone box, enter the amount of space that Word should leave between the end of the last word in a line and the right margin.
- In the Limit Consecutive Hyphens To box, enter the number of consecutive lines that can be hyphenated. Click OK.
- Save and close the Normal template.
Word 6.x, 7.x
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Files of Type List (List Files of Type list in Word 6.x), click Document Templates (*.dot) and be sure the current directory is your template subfolder (typically, this is C:\MSOffice\Template in Office for Windows 95, C:\Winword\Template in Word 6.0 for Windows, and <Macintosh HD>:Microsoft Word 6:Templates for the Macintosh).
- Select the Normal template and then click OK (Windows) or click Open (Macintosh).
- On the Tools menu, click Hyphenation.
- Click to select the Automatically Hyphenate Document check box.
