New Caledonia Font Prints Incorrectly on the HP LaserJet 4

ID: Q109685

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

The New Caledonia font from the TrueType Font Pack 2 for Windows prints incorrectly to the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4. The document displays correctly on screen and in print preview but prints as if there were a 1.5- inch to 2-inch left indentation. This happens both from Microsoft Windows Write and in all versions of Word 2.x for Windows.

CAUSE

According to HP, the problem is that the New Caledonia font has the pitch width in the "pclt" table set incorrectly. Because the HP LaserJet 4 uses the "pclt" table but Windows 3.1 does not, you will get correct interword spacing when printing to a LaserJet III, but not on a LaserJet 4.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
