PRB: Updated Help Compiler Needed for MS Word 6.0 RTF Files

PSS ID Number: Q109405 Article last modified on 02-05-1996

1.10

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Access Distribution Kit version 1.1

SYMPTOMS

When you compile a Help file with the Help compiler that ships with the Microsoft Access Distribution Kit (ADK), you receive error messages similar to the following:

  • This application has violated system integrity due to an invalid fault and will be terminated.
  • Quit all applications, quit Windows, and then restart your computer.

CAUSE

The Rich Text Format (RTF) file that you are using was created with Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows. This version of Word for Windows generates some new RTF items that are not supported by the Help compiler that ships with the ADK.

RESOLUTION

An updated version of the Help compiler is available on CompuServe and the Microsoft Download Service (MSDL). The updated Help compiler is compatible with Word 6.0 for Windows RTF files.

STATUS

This problem no longer occurs in the Microsoft Access Developer’s Toolkit version 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The Help compiler that ships with the ADK is named HC31.EXE and is version 3.10.504. To work with RTF files from Word version 6.0 for Windows, you need HC31.EXE version 3.10.505 or later. To determine which version of the help compiler you currently have, run HC.EXE or HCP.EXE at an MS-DOS prompt.

The following steps describe how to download the updated Help compiler from either CompuServe or the MSDL:

To locate the most recent version of the Help compiler on CompuServe:

  1. Log on to CompuServe.
  2. Type “go msl” (without the quotation marks).
  3. Choose the Scan option.
  4. When prompted for Keywords, type “help compiler” (without the quotation marks).

To locate the most recent version of the Help compiler on the MSDL:

  1. Connect to the MSDL at (206) 936-6735. Login instructions will be displayed.
  2. After you log in, choose the File Index option.
  3. Choose the Languages and Windows SDK option.
  4. Choose the Windows SDK option.
  5. Choose the Articles option.

Once you have located the most recent version of the Help compiler on either CompuServe or the MSDL, follow the online instructions for downloading the file.

Note that the file you download may contain two Help compiler files, HC.EXE and HCP.EXE. The HC.EXE compiler file is the standard Help compiler, and the HCP.EXE compiler file is the compiler for use with extended memory and larger files. The HCP.EXE compiler allows larger files to be compiled in the Windows environment than does the HC.EXE compiler.
