SYMPTOMS
A general protection (GP) fault may occur when you attach tables using ODBC. Or, you may notice that the borders of the ODBC dialog boxes appear unusual.
CAUSE
The GP fault may be caused by an older CTL3D.DLL file. This file is usually treated as a shared DLL and is installed in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. However, some applications will install the CTL3D.DLL file in the Windows directory. Older versions of the CTL3D.DLL file in the Windows directory can cause problems with ODBC.
RESOLUTION
Search your hard drive for CTL3D.DLL files. If there is more than one, rename all the files except the one with the latest date to some other filename. Make sure that the CTL3D.DLL file with the latest date is in the Microsoft Access is dated 5/21/93 or later with a size of 14,480 bytes.
STATUS
This behavior does not occur in Microsoft Access version 7.0.
