Office: Setup Does Not Allow Different Path for Disk |
Q109138
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.2
SUMMARY
In the Microsoft Office Setup program, you cannot specify a new path for disks. If the Setup program is started from a drive other than the one where Disk 2 will be inserted, the following error message will appear when Setup tries to access Disk 2
Could not open the file named:
<path>\DISK2\EXCEL.E1_
where <path> is the drive and path from which SETUP.EXE was initially run. For example if setup is run from the local drive C:\OFFICE\DISK1, the error would read:
Could not open the file named:
'C:\OFFICE\DISK2\EXCEL.E1_'
If you use the Winlink software to accomplish file transfer via a serial cable by allowing the B: drive of a desktop computer to be mapped as the A: of a laptop, you receive the error:
Error! Tried to create invalid path using a:\excel.e1_
WORKAROUND
If Setup cannot read a disk, and you need to copy information from one disk to another, do either of the following:
- Copy the contents of all of the disks to a new directory on your hard disk drive. (See NOTE below.)
-or-
- Copy the contents of the disk to a new floppy disk and then perform the installation using the new disk.
NOTE: If you copy the contents of all disks to a new directory on your hard drive, as in the first option above, the following subdirectory structure must be followed, or setup fails.
Disk Sample Path ----- ----------- Disk1 C:\TEST\DISK1 Disk2 C:\TEST\DISK2 . . . . Diskx C:\TEST\DISKx
Where C:\TEST is a directory with whatever name you choose. The Disk1, Disk2, through Diskx subdirectories are required for setup to succeed.
