Project Err Msg: "Value Not Valid" If List Separator Is Space

Q109099

kbusage kberrmsg

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 1.0, 3.0, 3.0a, 4.0
  • Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, versions 1.1, 3.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you use a space as a list separator, you may receive the "Value Not Valid" error message.

(To specify a list separator, choose Options from the Preferences menu and scroll to the List Separator filed. In version 4.0, change the list separator from Windows Control Panel International settings.)

This error message will appear when you edit the Show For column in the Gantt Palette and choose a condition that contains two or more words, for example "Not Summary."

CAUSE

Changing the list separator character may cause errors in fields, such as the Show For field in the Gantt Bar Palette, that contain multiple values and use the list separator to parse fields. If you use a space rather than a comma, Microsoft Project will try to parse the individual words instead of the values.

WORKAROUND

In order to modify the Show For field in the Palette, the list separator must be a comma. Once you have modified the Show For field, you can change the list separator back to a space.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Project, the default list separator is a comma. You may want to change the list separator to a space to allow certain fields, such as Resource Names, to wrap text.

NOTE: Using a space as the list separator will also cause errors when you save your project file in an .MPX file format. For more information about saving project files the .MPX file format, query on the following words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Steps to reproduce the problem in version 3.0.

  1. From the Options menu, choose Preferences. Scroll to the List Separator option, and replace the comma (,) with a space. Choose the OK button.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Palette. Scroll to a blank row and select the Show For column in that blank row.
  3. From the selection menu (located in the upper-left corner of the dialog box) choose a condition that contains two or more words, for example "In Progress."

When you make this selection, you will receive the "Value Not Valid" error message.
