The disk included with this document contains two files. The about the Microsoft Access security model to help you understand and use Microsoft Access security effectively. The WZSECURE.MDA file contains the Microsoft Access SecurityWizard, which is a tool for easily securing your databases. The white paper includes instructions for using the SecurityWizard. To Install the SecurityWizard

  1. Copy the WZSECURE.MDA file to your Microsoft Access 1.1 program directory.
  2. Add the following line to the [Libraries] section of your MSACCESS.INI file:

          WZSECURE.MDA=RO
  3. Add the following lines to your MSACCESS.INI file, and then save the file:

          [Menu Add-Ins]
          Security&Wizard==swz_SecureDB()

The next time you start Microsoft Access, the SecurityWizard command will be available on the Help menu. The SecurityWizard runs only in Microsoft Access version 1.1, but will work with databases in either 1.0 or 1.1 format. Attempting to use the SecurityWizard in Microsoft Access version 1.0 will result in an "Out- of-date database format" error message, followed by a "Some library modules could not be loaded" error message when you start Microsoft Access. Databases created by the SecurityWizard are always in version 1.1 format.

The SecurityWizard may take some time to run. For example, securing the sample database NWIND.MDB on a 486/50 computer takes approximately 13 minutes. The SecurityWizard's About dialog box gives further information on what the SecurityWizard does, as does the text file included on the disk.

The Security White Paper

The security white paper is a text document written by Microsoft Access development. It contains in-depth information on the security model used by Microsoft Access, details on how and why Microsoft Access security acts the way it does, and answers to some common security questions. The file is in text (.TXT) format and is readable by any word processor.
