SUMMARY
In the versions of Microsoft Project listed above, you can change schedule information directly on a Gantt chart by selecting the task and dragging the information that you want to change. One attribute of a task that you can change directly is its percent complete. However, this capability will not be available, if your Gantt palette does not have a progress bar definition.
NOTE: This does not occur in later versions of Microsoft Project.

The % complete insertion point allows you to select the right side of the progress bar or the left side of the scheduled duration bar on the Gantt chart to change the % complete of a task. If the bar doesn’t exist, then you cannot select the bar to change the task’s % complete.
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
- From the View menu, choose Define Views. Choose New. Choose Single Pane. Choose OK.
- In the View Definition dialog box, select Gantt Chart as the Screen, Entry as the Table, and All Tasks as the Filter. Choose OK.
- From the Define Views dialog box, choose Set.
- Enter a task in your project.
- Move the insertion point to the left side of the bar.
The insertion point should resemble a percent sign (%) and an arrow that points to the right. By dragging this insertion point, you can change the percent complete of the task.
From the Format menu, choose Palette. Select the Progress bar and choose the Cut button. Choose OK.
Repeat step 5.
The progress bar is not displayed on the screen; therefore, you can’t select it to change the task’s percent complete.
