When the selected cells contain mixed patterns, the Pattern box and Sample will not display a pattern until you choose both a pattern and a pattern color.

WORKAROUND

To display a sample of the pattern in the Pattern box when the selected cells contain mixed patterns, choose both a color and a pattern from the Pattern box.

MORE INFORMATION

When you choose a pattern from the Pattern box in the Format Cells dialog box, the pattern will be applied to the selected cells when you choose OK, even if no pattern is displayed in the Pattern box or the Sample.
