XL: Unable to Refer to Defined Names in Cell Note Reference

Last reviewed: September 13, 1996
Article ID: Q108386

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel when you use a defined name to reference a cell note to a cell, you will receive the following error message:

Reference must be to a single cell on the active sheet.

You will receive this error message even if the defined name refers to only one cell.

This is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Although a defined name can be one cell or a range of cells, a cell note must reference a single cell. Microsoft Excel does not check to see if the defined name refers to one cell or multiple cells.
