WPS: Can’t Print Internal Printer Device Fonts

PSS ID Number: Q108160 Article last modified on 09-09-1996

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Printing System version 1.0 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.1, 3.11 - Microsoft Windows for Workgroups versions 3.1, 3.11

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Windows Printing System (WPS) 1.0, you cannot print internal printer device fonts. If you have documents that were previously formatted using these device fonts, Windows may replace them with incorrect TrueType fonts.

CAUSE

When an application requests characters to print or display, Windows must map the font to one of the fonts installed on your system. Because device fonts are not available with WPS, Windows attempts to find the closest TrueType font to match the original device font.

If a document was originally formatted using one of the device fonts, CG Times or Univers for example, Windows substitutes Times New Roman or Arial (respectively), instead of the CG Times or Univers TrueType fonts, as the closest match.

WORKAROUND

You can instruct Windows to globally substitute all device fonts for their respective TrueType versions. The steps below outline this procedure.

  1. Open the WIN.INI file in an text editor.

  2. Locate the [FontSubstitutes] section.

  3. Following the above example with CG Times and Univers, add the following lines under [FontSubstitutes]:

CG Times (W1)=CG Times Univers (W1)=Univers

To substitute any other fonts, follow the above procedure inserting the font name as described in the [FONTS] section of the WIN.INI file.

NOTE: You must restart Windows for these changes to take effect You cannot use the internal printer fonts with the standard PCL printer driver once these changes have been made. The WPS and the PCL printer drivers both print the substituted fonts.
