The information in this article applies to:

  • == Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, or 5.1a ==

SYMPTOMS

When you convert a document created in Word for the Macintosh, frames may appear in a slightly different position than they were in the version of Word that created the file.

NOTE: This problem occurs when you convert a Word for the Macintosh version 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, or 5.1a document which contains a frame into a later version Word.

CAUSE

The frame is formatted as vertical inline, relative to margin. Word does not have an inline frame format. Instead, Word has a format called Move With Text. When converting an earlier Word for the Macintosh document which contains an inline formatted frame, Word formats it as Move With Text, with 0 (zero) inches relative to paragraph. This approximate conversion does not always place the frame in the exact same location that it had before the conversion, especially if text wraps below the frame.

RESOLUTION

To preserve the frame location when you convert your document, assign a fixed vertical position to the framed object. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the document in the version of Word that created the file.
  2. Click to select the framed object.
  3. On the Format menu, click Frame.
  4. In the Frame dialog box, under Vertical, type a number in the Relative To box, or click to select either Top, Center or Bottom.
  5. Click OK to close the Frame dialog box.
  6. Save and close your document.
