WD: MSWORD6.CNV Converter Setup Installs SHARE.EXE

Q107888

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0

SUMMARY

When you have Word 2.0 for Windows installed under Windows 3.1 and you run the Word for Windows 6.0 Converter Kit Setup program, if SHARE.EXE is not already installed, it will be added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file with the following parameters:

SHARE /L:500 /F:5100

The Word 6.0 converter needs Share for object linking and embedding (OLE) version 2.0 operations. (The converter must interpret OLE 2.0 information when converting to and from Word 6.0 file format.)

MORE INFORMATION

Share is not necessary if you are running Word 2.0 under Windows for Workgroups 3.1 in 386 enhanced mode. Windows for Workgroups uses a comparable file-sharing utility called VSHARE.386.

If you want to minimize memory usage, you can load SHARE.EXE without the optional /L:500 /F:5100 parameters in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Without optional configuration parameters, Share uses 6K of memory.
