SUMMARY

This article contains the Microsoft Works for Windows versions 2.0 and 3.0 Spreadsheet Questions and Answers.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. Q. When I type a person’s name in a cell or field, why does Works automatically change it to the name of a month?

    A. If you type data that resembles the name of a month into a cell or field, Works assumes that it is the name of a month and modifies the data accordingly. This can happen with some people’s names. For example, Works may abbreviate the names April, Marc, and June to Apr, Mar, and Jun. Names like Marc and Jan may be automatically expanded to March and January.

To increase its speed and ease of use, Works is programmed to make some assumptions. Sometimes its assumptions may be incorrect.

To avoid this problem, enter the names as text, by starting each entry with a quotation mark.

  2. Q. When I print my spreadsheet, only some cells print, or nothing prints at all. Why?

    A. To troubleshoot printing problems in a spreadsheet, check the following areas:

    - Is the print area set correctly? If only a few cells are set as
the print area, only some cells will print.

    - Are columns and rows hidden? If so, they will not print.

    - Does the document display correctly in print preview?

    - Are you using the correct printer driver, and is it set up
correctly? Can you print correctly from other Windows
applications? If not, you will probably not be able to print
      from Works.
  3. Q. I’m still a bit confused about print areas. How do I reset the print area in the Works Spreadsheet?

    A. To reset the print area in Works 3.0 to include the entire spreadsheet, use the following three-step procedure:

    1. From the Edit menu, choose Select All.

    2. From the Format menu, choose Set Print Area.

    3. Choose OK to set the print area to the current selection.

To reset the print area in Works 2.0 to include the entire spreadsheet, use the following two-step procedure:

    1. From the Select menu, choose All.

    2. From the File menu, choose Set Print Area.

NOTE: If you reset the print area in Works 2.0a, Works warns you that the print area is being changed. Works 2.0 does not.

  4. Q. How do I unhide rows and columns in the Works 3.0 Spreadsheet?

    A. To unhide columns and rows in Works 3.0, use the following five-step procedure:

    1. From the Edit menu, choose Select All.

    2. From the Format menu, choose Column Width.

    3. In the Column Width dialog box, either accept the default column width of 10 or enter another number greater than zero. Choose OK.

NOTE: Choosing Best Fit for the column width will not unhide a blank column.

    4. From the Format menu, choose Row Height.

    5. In the Row Height dialog box, either accept the default row height of 12, enter another number greater than zero, or choose Best Fit. Choose OK.

  5. Q. How do I unhide rows and columns in the Works 2.0 Spreadsheet?

    A. To unhide columns and rows in Works 2.0, use the following three-step procedure:

    1. From the Select menu, choose All.

    2. From the Format menu, choose Column Width.

    3. In the Column Width dialog box, either accept the default column width of 10, or enter another number greater than zero. Choose OK.

  6. Q. How many fonts can I have in my spreadsheet?

    A. If you are using Works 3.0, you can use up to 512 fonts in your spreadsheet if your computer memory will allow it. This is due to the 512-font limitation of Works 3.0.

If you are using Works 2.0, you can only use one font in your spreadsheet.
