The information in this article applies to: |
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0 - Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0 |
SYMPTOM
If you do not attach a Word for MS-DOS style sheet containing heading level styles that coincide with the headings in your Word for Windows outline when you save a document in Word for MS-DOS format, all headings will appear as normal (flush-left) text in outline view when the document is subsequently opened in Word for MS-DOS. For example, what originally appears in Word for Windows as
Heading 1 Heading 2 Heading 3
will instead appear in Word for MS-DOS outline view as:
Heading 1 Heading 2 Heading 3
CAUSE
Word for MS-DOS and Word for Windows retain outline information within a document differently. Word for Windows uses heading level paragraph styles to format outline headings. With Word for MS-DOS, you can raise or lower heading levels within outline view in Word for MS-DOS without actually applying styles to the text.
Word for Windows depends on heading level style information from a Word for MS-DOS style sheet to establish the proper paragraph heading styles and retain appearance of an outline when saving as Word for MS-DOS format.
WORKAROUND
When you choose to save as Word for MS-DOS format and Word for Windows prompts you with the message, “Attach a style sheet to converted Word file?”, provide the path and name of a Word for MS-DOS style sheet that contains heading paragraph styles coinciding with each level in your outline. Appearance will subsequently be preserved for all outline heading levels in Word for MS-DOS outline view.
