Text Prints Plain Instead of Bold or Italic PSS ID Number: Q107701 Article last modified on 10-14-1994 PSS database name: MACSYS

1.00 MACINTOSH

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft TrueType Master Set version 1.0

SYMPTOM

A Master Set font does not print to a PostScript printer in bold and/or italic, even though it displays that way on-screen.

CAUSE

Some fonts do not come with their bold, italic, or bold-italic versions. For example, Baskerville Old Face does not have a bold, italic, or a bold- italic font face and cannot print in any of these faces even though they display on-screen; instead, the font prints in plain Baskerville Old Face. The problem most commonly occurs with Headline, Decorative, and Symbol fonts but also occurs with a few of the Text fonts, as listed below:

Text Fonts that don’t print in bold or italic

Baskerville Old Face Centaur Eurostyle (no italic)

Text fonts that don’t print in bold-italic

Baskerville Old Face Bell MT Centaur Eurostyle Futura Medium New Caledonia

Note: Some font faces are referred to as demibold or oblique. These names correspond to bold and italic.

STATUS

This functionality is under review for all fonts in the TrueType Master Set and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the Macintosh can emulate a missing bold or italic TrueType Master Set font on-screen, it cannot print it to a PostScript printer. This problem does not occur with QuickDraw-based printers.
