How Cross-References Convert Between WordPerfect and Word

Q107684

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SUMMARY

Word 6.0 converts WordPerfect footnote number, endnote number, page number, and graphic box cross-references to equivalent footnote, endnote, page number, and caption cross-reference fields, and vice versa.

Only the textual result of WordPerfect paragraph and outline cross- references are retained in Word. Microsoft has identified this as a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post additional information as it becomes available.

WordPerfect versions 5.1 for MS-DOS and 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows do not support header number, heading text, bookmark text, or caption cross- references. Therefore, Word 6.0 heading number cross-references are converted to WordPerfect paragraph number cross-references (the most similar type) and the latest results are retained for the other cross- reference types.

Cross-references made in WordPerfect master documents to bookmarks (targets) located in sub-documents are retained in conversion to Word 6.0. When such cross-references are detected, Word first converts the master document and then prompts for conversion/insertion of each sub- document into the converted master file. Although the codes themselves are retained, retention of cross-references to included documents does not invoke automatic conversion of each document when saving as WordPerfect format. The documents must be converted separately and the cross-reference links must be updated after the conversion.

Cross-reference to multiple targets is not a feature of Word 6.0. The first target result of a WordPerfect multiple cross-reference becomes the cross- reference in Word. If the cross-reference field is subsequently updated, the last relevant bookmark (target) is used to update the field.
